What is Advent?
Listen to the most current Advent 2009 Sermon
The
four Sundays in Advent offer a very special season in which to think
deeply about Christ’s Coming. For the first several centuries of the
Christian era Advent was not a celebration of the first coming (birth)
of Jesus, but of his Second Coming. It was not until the Middle Ages
that the Church began using the Advent season to celebrate the birth of
Christ and even then it did not supplant the older sense – the Second
Coming. Therefore, along with the joy and celebration of the Christmas
season, we want to explore the older sense of Advent; a more muted
penitential call to watch and pray for our Bride Groom is
near.
